Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland: Tablelands

See the area in the upper middle of the photograph? That's rare territory. There are only a few such places like it in the world. 

Here's the story: Newfoundland was the site of an extremely rare set of geological conditions over the years. As a result, part of the earth's mantle popped up out of the ground, essentially. In other words, you can walk on material that usually is found well beneath the surface layer of the planet. 

While the land around is quite green, the Tablelands are quite brown, as in dirt and rock. That makes a little less beautiful, but some knowledge of plate tectonics will let you enjoy the experience. 

I wish we had gone up to that area and taken a little walk, but this photo from Bonne Bay is as close as we got. At there's a video:
