L’Anse Amour, Labrador: Ancient Burial Site

This is an odd little attraction, and it takes a little faith to make it worthwhile as well as a detour.. It's an ancient burial site of an Archaic child from 7,500 years ago. A variety of artifacts were found with it, including a walrus tusk and a harpoon head.

That's a long time. If you happen to find the place, and there's not much around it, you'll notice that the burial site is quite a ways from a bay. What happened? Over the years, the outline of the Strait of Belle Isle has changed, as the water has receded. Certainly this population must have been close to the water during its crucial years.

This became a National Historic Site of Canada in 1978.  And no wonder. There's no older burial site in the Western Hemisphere.
