The Point Amour Lighthouse has been watching over the area between Labrador and Newfoundland for almost 150 years. It's still working, and still open to the public.
In fact, you can walk up the steps to the top ... although a little nerve is needed. It's 132 steps, and the last few are on a ladder. Nine of us in the tour group made the climb.
We had a good look at the lens at the top, which beams out light to the area. The light goes on for 16 seconds and off for four seconds, so that boats know exactly what it is.
We also had some fine views of the shoreline, which made it all worthwhile. That's not surprising, since it is the second tallest lighthouse in Canada and No. 1 in Atlantic Canada.
The area has some open space around it. Therefore, you can take a nice walk in the area during a visit. If you show up at the right time of the year, you might see an iceberg.
