Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland

As national parks become more popular, they usually see a town develop as something of a jumping-off point for visitors. Such is the case for Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland, located on the western short of the province. Rocky Harbour serves as the Sherpa in this case.

It is located right on the edge of Bonne Bay, overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The village only had a few hundred people (once using the names Small Bay or Little Harbour) until Gros Morne reached National Park status in 1973. The population promptly tripled, but was still under 1,000. There is some hiking here, and the views are quite good as you can see.
