Portland Creek, Newfoundland: Arches Provincial Park, Newfoundland

Need a pleasant spot for a picnic lunch in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland? Here's a place that works pretty well in that area.

The Arches Provincial Park in Portland Creek is a rather cozy place. A forest comes up close to the shoreline, which hosts three large rocks. Time and erosion have gone to work over the years and years, and they have blasted holes in them. The effect is quite nice.

This area became a park in 1972, probably because people were coming here in large numbers anyway. There is good-sized amount of parking available, and some public toilets for those interested. More importantly in this case, about five picnic tables with views of the rocks are available for visitors.

Yes, we did bring a lunch there - and wished we had a little more time.
