St. John's, Newfoundland: O'Brien Park

This memorial on Signal Hill in St. John's is a good reason why it's always a good idea to read the fine print. It's a tribute to the O'Brien family, and Newfoundland's most bereaved mother of World War II.

Margaret O'Brien had five sons. Four of them died in the War - Maurice, Michael, James and David. A researcher looked for clues in the story, and discovered that Margaret's husband Maurice Sr. also died in World War II. Only Denis was left in the family by the time the war ended.

Mrs. O'Brien died in her 80s in 1963. Further details of the story aren't available, but it's sad and interesting as it is.
