St. John's, Newfoundland: Jellybean Row

It's a rather typical big city story. Housing in a certain part of town starts to decay, which reduces its value. Before long, no one is anxious to live there ... until the arts community realizes there are buildings in good locations available for low prices. Sold. Then the structures are built up, and the neighborhood becomes trendy.

That's the story of Jellybean Row in St. John's. There are two key points worth explaining about this area. One, it became a trend to paint some of the places in very bright colors. It looks great.

Two, the area is on a particularly steep piece of land near the water's edge. You should know that it's not as if every house on a particular street has been restored and painted. You have to walk around a bit to take it all in. The effect is lessened that way, but it's still worth the stroll.

Yes, you can stay there in B&Bs if you are visiting St. John's. In fact, it might be a lot of fun to do so.
