The Block Arcade dates back well over a century. The well-to-do had been coming to the area since the 1870s, and "doing the block" was an expression of people that chose to strut and stroll a little bit during that era. That led to the name, the Block Arcade.
A fire wiped out the old structure on the site in 1889, and the owners decided to rebuild with as many frills as possible. The first stage of construction was done by 1891, and the entire facility opened in 1893. It has had a variety of owners over the years, and many of them seem to have realized they are caretakers for something special. The place looks great in an old-tine way.
Be sure to check out the chocolate shop there, Haigh's. Mighty tasty.
