Queenstown, New Zealand: TSS Earnslaw

They don't make them like this any more - the coal-powered steamship, that is. Yet the TSS Earnslaw keeps churning along in the Queenstown area, doing its job of cruising the lake.

New Zealand Railways commissioned its building, and it was cruising Lake Wakatipu in 1912. It moved passengers, livestock and merchandise to more distant regions of the area. The facility has had some close calls over the years, starting in 1968 when a plan to close the boat down was first raised. But it was sold to a new owner in the early 1980s, and after a remodeling cruises on.

The coal power is a subject of concern when it comes to pollution in the region. The owners are said to be working on possible alternatives in order to solve the problem.

If you can avoid the smoke, a trip on a pleasant day is an absolute delight. You can board it from the main pier of Queenstown. We had blue skies above, snow-covered mountain peaks above us, and deep blue water below. Filling in the air was the singing of a variety of a tunes who was a friend of every song she sang. We almost wanted to say, "Take another lap around the lake, please."
