This served many functions at the Theatre of Dionysus. First of all, the photo shows that only support foundations remain for a good-sized runway that moved foot traffic along. However, it displays the openings between columns that could be used for audience members in case of bad weather. Meanwhile, the show business people stored props for plays in those spaces.
The walkway/gallery made it until the third century AD, when it was more or less destroyed. But the remains were found in 1877 and 1878. It still looks good today.
