Athens, Greece: The Tower of the Winds

This has been called the world's first weather station. Who can disagree?

The Tower of the Winds was used to study the elements, and the wind gods are displayed on the outside of this eight-sided building. It had both a water clock and some sundials, since cloudy days messed up one method of telling the time. It's the only such building of its kind that has survived the years in such great shape. It was made of marble. We're guessing that the building opened for business around 50 BC.

This is located in the Agora section of town, almost within the shadow of the Acropolis. It was covered up for a while, but in the 19th century the Greek Archeological Society dug it up.
