Delphi, Greece: Sphinx of Naxos

It's arguable about what is the most impressive monument in the Archeological Museum of Delphi. However, I have a feeling that the Sphinx of Naxos comes very early in the tour for a reason. It seems like someone wanted to show it off.

This status is more than 7 feet tall and made of marble. The sphinx is a mythical creature that features a woman's head, the wings of a bird, and the body of a lioness. That's quite a combination, not to be messed with.

The Sphinx was on a large column near the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, which served as the religious capital of Greece. It was put in place in 560 BCE, which puts the age at more than 2,500 years. Looks pretty good for that age, I'd say.

Scientists found the first portion of the statue around 1860, and the rest was found in 1893. A sphinx often served as a guard to important religious buildings back then.

So how is it doing? Let's find out.
