Cape Town, South Africa: Tuynhuys

Talk about modest beginnings.

A structure first landed on this particular spot in Cape Town in 1674. It was a tool shed for the garden that is nearby, constructed by the Dutch East India Company. That approach only lasted until 1682, when the building became a guest house for dignitaries. It's gone through a variety of changes over the years.

Now? It's the home of the President of South Africa. That's quite a promotion.

As you might expect, a variety of South African history was made from this place. The most noteworthy might have come in 1992. F.W. de Klerk, the final President of the Republic of South Africa, announced that the country had "closed the book on apartheid."
