Atlanta, Georgia: Centennial Olympic Park

You might have heard that the Summer Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996. When the planning for the Games was underway, organizers thought it would be good to have a central area for the festivities. Thus, the Centennial Olympic Park was created.

Some vacant land was cleared out first, and the park opened shortly before the Games began. It became something of a meeting place, and it was the setting for some medal presentations. Sadly, it was also the setting for a bombing on a Saturday night during the games, which killed two people (one indirectly) and injured 111.

The Games went on from there to their conclusion, and then it was time for phase two of the plane. The area has become the centerpiece for several tourist attractions and hotels. There's a splash pad with water coming out of the Olympic ring design on the ground. You can even ride a Ferris Wheel and take a look at the grounds from above.

The place isn't finished yet. A new sculpture was added in late 2018 in the form of a representation of the Olympic rings. If you need a selfie as a connection to the Olympics, this works. One note - there are signs around the structure saying to stay off of it; when we were there, a lot of parents couldn't read them.

Time for a little video on the subject:
