Helsinki, Finland: Uspenski Cathedral

Every city in Europe seems to have a nice, old church. This one located a few blocks from the waterfront certainly qualifies.

Uspenski Cathedral has been around since 1868. The area now known as Finland was controlled by Russia at that point in history, and as could be guessed the grand church is a reflection of that fact. It's the largest Orthodox church in Northern and Western Europe, and stands majestically on a rock overlooking the waterfront. The interior is quite beautiful, even if the bricks for the project were recycled.

Its geographic position makes it easy to find, and about 500,000 do that every year. They certainly notice the 13 towers - one for each apostle and one for Jesus. And they show up for musical concerts that must be quite inspiring.

We didn't get inside during our visit on a late afternoon. Therefore, it was nice to have a video available.
