Morristown, New Jersey: Washington's Headquarters

This nice little town in the middle of New Jersey has been called "the military capital of the American Revolution." This requires a little explanation.

Morristown is nicely located between New York City and Philadelphia, where some of the action was taking place during the Revolution. General George Washington spent a couple of winters in the area - 1777 and 1779-80. As you'd expect, there wasn't much fighting taking place in that era during the winter. It was difficult to move men and their supplies too far. So this was the place where the Continental Army kept an eye on British forces, making sure they weren't up to any mischief.

The Ford Mansion - where Washington and his wife stayed in the 1779-80 winter - is available for guided tours to see where he lived in that time. Of course, you have to get there before closing time (we didn't). Therefore, we had to be happy with seeing this spiffy if shady statue of Washington across the street. Alexander Hamilton is in the neighborhood too.

here is an historical part a few miles away from the headquarters where the troops stayed; it's worth a visit if you want to learn more about the Continental Army.
