Hodgenville, Kentucky: Lincoln's Boyhood Home

Modest little place. It's a few miles north of Hodgenville. The Lincolns lived on the main road between Louisville and Nashville -- it's not far from the current Interstate -- and Abe's first memories of a house were about this one. He lived here from 1811 to 1816.

It is a National Historic Site, and rangers do watch the place. The one we saw was very happy to have company. This is not the original model of the house; that's long gone. But it is a reproduction of the type of log cabin that Lincoln used from ages two to seven, and it's on the exact same spot as it was more than 200 years ago.

A converted tavern nearby now serves as the Visitors Center nearby. When we were there, a fundraising campaign around 2005, a fund-raising campaign was underway to try to preserve the structure. We couldn't go inside then, but you can do it now.
