St. Augustine, Florida: The Old City
If you are going to be the oldest city in the United States, you might as well celebrate the fact. That's what the good folks of St. Augustine, Fla., have done.
You can take a long walking tour of the Old City if you want, and there are plenty of guidebooks to help. However, a simple walk down St. George St. (shown) might be enough to satisfy your curiosity. There is an interesting combination of historical locations (such as America's oldest wooden schoolhouse), restaurants and shops. OK, it's a little touristy, but that's to be expected. It's still a nice place to walk on a pleasant day, particularly with an ice cream cone.
