German artist Gunter Demmig started a project designed to keep the names of the victims of Nazi atrocities alive. Stolpersteine translates to stepping stones. The locations of those lost number more than 1,000 now, with 45,000 people remembered this way. The stones are located in 17 countries. In Berlin, 5,000 names are part of the pavement. They are located at the person's last known address. Add them up, and this is the largest Holocaust monument in the world.
It comes with a catch. Some like the idea of remembering the victims, but having their names on the street - where a variety of abuses can take place to them - seems a little inappropriate. Your reactions may vary.
