Bucharest, Romania: Stavropoleos Monastery

Here's a place that certainly stands out in the middle of the Old Town in Bucharest.

The Stavropoleos Monastery is a home for Eastern Orthodox nuns in the area. It is named after a Greek monk who constructed the building back in 1724. Much of the complex fell apart during a couple of major earthquakes, but the church still survives.

The monastery is often associated with Byzantine music. The choir specializes in that type of sound, and it has the country's biggest collection of books on Byzantine music.

While the church is old and attractive, the courtyard seems like it could be a personal favorite for many. It's tucked away a bit, and thus offers a little relief from the hustle/bustle of the Old Town and its accompanying tourists.

It only takes a few minutes to see it all.
