Quito, Ecuador: Basílica del Voto Nacional

The name of this place translates to "The Basilica of the National Vow." It's a tribute to the time in 1883, when Ecuador wanted to build a reminder of its consecration to the Sacred Heart - which is a popular Catholic devotion.  The idea started to take shape in 1883, and the first stone was placed in 1892. The facility was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1988. 

The place is still considered "unfinished," which might not be the worst idea. It is said that if the building is ever completed, the end of the world will follow. 

The two towers go up 115 meters, making it the highest neogothic church in South America. You can take an elevator to the top for a look around. Several heads of state are buried there.  

Since Ecuador is 92 percent Catholic, you can imagine that this is a popular stop for locals and tourists alike.
