Queenstown, New Zealand: Skyline Gondola

The walk to the Skyline Gondola is steep. Quite steep. Tough to walk up the hill steep.

That's all right. It's worth it.

Eventually visitors reach the entry point to Skyline Gondola, and then head up the mountain. The ride goes for a handful of minutes, up the steepest ride in the Southern Hemisphere.

Finally, they reach the top - and they see a spectacular 220-degree view of the town and its surroundings. This is a great way to see the city at once. The gardens stick out into the dark blue lake, the mountains rise up to respectable heights,  No wonder I used the photo from the viewing area as the introduction to the city on this site.

Interestingly enough, the ride also has a luge run at the top of the mountain. Luge usually is paired with winter, but these vehicles are designed for summer use. Gravity does the work here instead of engins, and humans do the braking. Since multiple rides are required, it's a little pricey. Besides, I'm a little tall on a good fit on the vehicle, so I had to pass. Too bad.
