Athens, Greece: Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis has plenty of other structures besides the Parthenon on it. The catch is that most of it has broken into pieces after a couple of thousand years. That begs the question, what happens to the relics from there?

In many cases, it goes to the Acropolis Museum - located right next door. And it's great in a very different way.

Museums have been part of the Acropolis for many years. The original museum opened up on the hill in 1874, and was expanded in the 1950s. But as archeologists kept digging, they kept finding more items of interest. It was rather obvious that something much bigger was needed.

A space for a new museum was found next to the Acropolis, which itself is a story. It was built on top of some old ruins, which became part of the attraction of a visit. Visitors look down through glass and see remains of past civilizations.

The building took a few decades to plan and build, but it opened for business in 2009. There are all sorts of items on display, and you'll probably be surprised how many items are mostly complete. The new museum was built in the hope that some items currently under British control would be returned to the Acropolis area. Both sides are still arguing about that one.

A video is obviously needed here.
