Athens, Greece: "To the Unarmed Fighters of the Battle of Crete"

One look at this and you know you're headed toward something unusual. The sculpture comes with an interesting story.

The German army invaded Greece by air in 1941, and the Greeks decided to try to make a stand on the island of Crete. The home soldiers as well as the Allies fought bravely, but they had some unexpected help from the local population. The people of Crete had no military weapons, but did whatever they could to pitch in. The Germans eventually won the battle, but the cost was high in terms of casualties, and the delay caused by the slow capture bought the Greeks some valuable time. The Germans never used paratroopers in an invasion again after "failing" in this theater.

The sculpture shows three people - vague enough to be men or women - banding together in a vigorous activity. It symbolizes the effort and bravery involved.

Who knew?
