Lake Mead Recreation Area, Nevada

It's not quite the dark side of the moon -- note the highway in the middle of it -- but the Lake Mead Recreation Area isn't exactly the Strip in Las Vegas, either. The area pictured above is north of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, and offers some fascinating geological views.

Lake Mead was created by the dam, and it has become the area's top site for boating and fishing. That's not surprising, since most of the land in the area is close to a desert. Some interesting land masses were covered over by the lake, but there's no turning back now -- the West was changed forever when the dam was finished.

You think a McDonald's would look good here?
