Niagara Falls, New York: Whirlpool State Park

Sure, you can stay on top of the Niagara Gorge and take in the view for a while -- maybe even have a picnic. After all, there's no better view of the whirlpool area of the Niagara River than from the top of the state park. But if you can, you really should go for a little walk.

There are steps leading down to the edge of the Niagara River. They haven't received a great deal of maintenance over the years, and I wouldn't do it after a rainstorm without hiking boots, but the steps (as shown) are pretty in a 1930's sort of way.

But it's a heck of a view once you get there. You can look up and see the gondola that goes over a portion of the gorge caused by a river that dried up a long, long time ago. The car actually goes from Canada to Canada. It's pretty breathtaking just to watch it cross.

It's possible to walk along the short line for a while at least. The more adventurous you are, the longer you can hike. But don't take any chances. If there's an accident, it would be difficult to get help down there.

Either way, it's an easy drive along the edge of the gorge from Niagara Falls north. Look for the sign for Whirlpool State Park. There is enough parking to handle the crowds most of the time.
