Nuremberg, Germany: Spittlertor Tower

Way back in the 14th century, Nuremberg had a gate in its walled city. It was necessary to let people come and go, of course, but it was also something of a dangerous point if the bad guys knocked at the door. The Spittletor Tower was built just for that defensive purpose. Three other such towers were built at that time.

In World War II, the tower served as a bunker/bomb shelter. In the 21st century, it became a military museum to display artifacts from the Bavarian Army.

You can climb it - it is about seven stories and costs a few Euros. That might be worth it for some good photo opportunities. You can also admire it from below for nothing.
