Luxembourg, Luxembourg: Grand Duchess Charlotte Monument

It took a little time for Luxembourg to honor one of its leaders - about a quarter of a century.

Grand Duchess Charlotte ruled the country from 1919 to 1964. Considering we were getting over World War I, went through the Depression, saw World War II, and then rebuild the world during that time, you'd have to say Charlotte's reign was eventful.

The sculpture shown here was done by Jean Cordot and found a place of honor in 1990. Charlotte has her palm up and is reaching to the sky. The sarcastic people out there says it looks like she is asking for a handout, and called the statue Heeschefraa (beggar woman). Good intentions are always rewarded, it seems.
