Riquewihr, France: City Walls

For a tiny village, Riquewihr has had an interesting history. Back in the 1500s, it established a reputation for wine. That meant that the city took in plenty of money, especially considering its size. Sometimes when money comes, trouble follows.

Therefore, the city put up some walls to keep the trouble-makers out. Considering some of the walls are still visible, you'd have to say someone did a nice job. Some interesting ruins are located at the top of the main street (Rue du General de Daulle). Be sure to walk through the gate and take a look if you are in the area.
