Strasbourg, France: Place Gutenburg

Where would we be without Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable and mechanical printing press in Europe in 1439? He did it right here in Strasbourg. No wonder one of the best town squares in the city is named after him.

Johannes lived here from 1434 to 1444, and that invention changed everything. Suddenly knowledge could be preserved and passed around freely, causing what might have been an intellectual explosion that slowly affected every corner of the world. Gutenberg printed his famous Bible in 1455, which transformed religion.

The square is surrounded by nice buildings, and flea markets often fill up the space in the middle. Gutenberg is there watching it all, thanks to a sculpture in 1840. It features a quotation - “Et la lumière fut” (And behold, there was light). Scenes from his life are on the base of the monument.

Got a minute to look around?
