Atlanta, Georgia: Georgia Aquarium

Let's go fishing.

Bernard Marcus, a founder of the Home Depot Corporation, wanted to do something with his money that would be educational and spur economic development. After doing some traveling, he came up with a plan for an aquarium for Atlanta. And not just any aquarium - the biggest in the world at the time of construction.

Marcus wrote a $250 million check, and helped raise some other money for the project. The place opened in 2005, and certainly casts a big shadow in the neighborhood around Centennial Olympic Park.

The facility has seven major galleries, and holds hundreds of different species and animals. Some other numbers connected to the aquarium are staggering, such as the 11 million gallons of water needed for everything inside.

That's not the only part of the aquarium that is big. It costs almost $50 for an adult to enter the place, which is a lot. It's also popular - quite popular. That means the crowds can be a little overwhelming at times, and keeping up with the goal of a clean facility can be a challenge (at least according to some reviews I saw).

We didn't have time to take several hours out of our limited schedule to see the place. Guess a video will have to do - this one is a little long but might be of interest.
