Atlanta, Georgia: State Farm Arena

It seems like most sports fans of a certain age remember the Omni in Atlanta. It was the home of the Atlanta Hawks after they moved in from St. Louis, and it was the home of the Atlanta Flames before they moved to Calgary. One of the interesting parts was that the corners of the arena featured seats that were at an angle, so the seating wasn't box-like.

It was a nice place, particularly for hockey, but it had a problem. Engineers didn't allow for Atlanta's humid climate, and the steel started to rust pretty quickly. So it was time to get a new place. That leads us to the demolition of the Omni in 1997, and the construction of Philips Arena in 1999. The Hawks and the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers were the main tenants, although the Thrashers eventually moved to Winnipeg to become a reincarnation of the Jets. State Farm bought the naming rights in 2018, as Philips got out of the consumer electronics business. (Wonder if someone named Jake from State Farm works there?)

The place has something close to the now traditional layout for sports arena. The one catch is that there are a few nooks and crannies around. Walk clockwise around the top of the place, for example, and you'll be making mostly right turns, but the occasional left turn. The corners of the inside around are filled in, probably to support the roof. The scoreboards are huge and the lighting is Hollywood worthy, as you'd expect.

By the way, there's a statue of Dominque Wilkins outside of the arena. Be sure to pose for a photo when you say hello to 'Nique.
