Bronnoysund, Norway: Torghatten

I guess you could say a hole is the biggest tourist attraction in Bronnoysund.

OK, let's not call it a hole. Let's call it a natural tunnel. And even with a little warning, seeing it can startle. Was it a horseman's arrow that caused the hole? According to the story, a troll threw his hat at an arrow to save a beautiful girl. The punctured hat eventually was turned into the mountain.

Buying that? How about ice erosion? We'll let the scientists take care of that argument. In the meantime, you can walk through the opening, which is quite long (160 meters) and high (35 meters).

We do know the worst moment in the history of the mountain. A plane crashed into its side in 1988, killing all 36 aboard.

Our boat was a bit away from Torghatten when we passed it. I took this photo through the glass of the dining room. Then I ran up a flight of stairs and out to the balcony to try to see if I could do better, even though the ship was moving away from the mountain by the second. For whatever reason, the shot through the glass turned out better, and that's the one you see here.

After having only this view, it's fascinating to see what it looks like up close:
