Helsinki, Finland: Helsinki University Library

Sometimes it's good to get a little lost.

We were walking from the train station to our hotel in downtown Helsinki and decided we'd go back a different way. It didn't quite work out the way we planned, thanks to some streets that weren't exactly parallel.

But, we did walk by an interesting looking building, and snapped a photo of it. It turned out to be the Helsinki University Library - the biggest library of a university in the country. The library is considered separate from the university, and is therefore open to all. Branches exist on all four campuses of the school.

The key part is that it is open to everyone in Finland. You just have to be 15 years old. About 40,000 people are considered active borrowers, and almost two million people drop by during a typical year.

If you are in the neighborhood - on purpose, of course - be sure to check out the large corkscrew staircase in the front of the building.
