Rovaniemi, Finland: Santa Claus Village

Traveling can offer such an education.

Here I was, always thinking that Santa Claus lived on the North Pole. It turns out that he opted to stay on land rather than try to live on floating ice in the Arctic Ocean.

In other words, Santa hangs out here, in Rovaniemi - the gateway to Lapland.

Mr. Claus is available to greet visitors here. He'll even pose for a photo, as long as you pay for the privilege. A post office is here to tend to your mailing needs, and the "outlet mall" is filled with shops that can handle most tourists' requests. There's even a hotel and restaurant for those who want to stay longer.

But realistically, the big draw outside of Santa is the Arctic Circle. The Village is right on the main road, and it's very easy to hop off, park the car, and take a look around. Heck, the airport is almost right around the corner.

As you can see, the line goes through the facilities. You can buy a certificate proving you were above the imaginary geographic line. There's some typical commercialism involved with a stop, but still ... who can resist?

Let's see how it looks at Christmas:
