Trondheim, Norway: Stiftsgården

It's good to be the King. (And thank you, Mel Brooks.)

This is the official home of the King of Norway whenever he visits Trondheim. Since most of his time is spent in Oslo, you'd have to think this is rather empty a lot. But it dates back to the 18th century and is one of the oldest wooden buildings in all of Scandinavia.

It first was used as a private home for the proverbial wealthy widow, but eventually it came to be used whenever a new King was in town to be crowned. The Lord Lieutenant, who usually lived there, had to get out in a hurry when that happened.

The building is located in the center of the city, and you can visit it in season. Sounds like it might be a good idea.
