Bergen, Norway: The Sailors' Monument

It's Macho Time in Bergen.

This statue is designed to salute the city's water-related past. The four-sided sculpture has three male figures on each side, saluting four different eras in the city's history. The objects are quite masculine, as you'd expect. It does cause to wonder where all the women were during those eras; I'll bet their contribution was considerable and underrated.

This monument is located in large pedestrian square right in the middle of the shopping district. As you'd expect, the area is quite crowded during summer afternoons. It's been there since 1950, and everyone but the tourists seemed to be used to its presence. Its 21-foot height can provided a little shade on those rare days when shadows are needed in Bergen.
