The Baron lived from 1684 to 1754, and did a lot of different writing - essays, novels, plays, and some nonfiction (history). Ludwig has been called the father of Danish and Norwegian literature.
The statue dates back to 1884. Given its proximity to the Bergen Fish Market (across Torget Street), Market Square is always a whirl of activity and a favorite among people watchers. In the center is a statue of Ludvig Holberg, the Baron of Holberg. During his lifetime (1684 – 1754), this native son was an influential writer of essays, novels and historical nonfiction plus a playwright of over 30 comedies. He is considered to be the father of Danish and Norwegian literature.
This bronze tribute to Holberg was
sculpted by John Börjeson in 1884. It's right in front of the Bergan Bors Hotel. It's in a nice building that used to serve as a stock market, and you can't beat the location downtown.
