Niagara Falls, New York: Love Canal Monument

If you aren't particularly sentimental about your ecological disasters, the Love Canal Monument is your kind of tourist attraction.

Here's a very, very short recap of the story: As you probably know, Love Canal became one of the worst environmental problems in American history when the issue was discovered in 1977. A chemical company had been depositing all sorts of horrible chemicals in the ground. The canal was sort of capped, but residents in the area started getting sick. It took about 25 years to clean up the area, although some of the land certainly won't be available to be inhabited anytime soon.

It's not exactly easy to find the marker which was put up to commemorate the event. It is located on something of an athletic field/playground/park at Shantz Avenue and 93rd Street. The memorial overlooks the intersection, and can be noticed by some landscaping around it and a small walkway leading from the street to the monument.

As for the marker itself, it's basically a timeline of events in the history of the disaster. Period. Click on the photo, and you'll see the names of some of the people involved that are bigger than the list of events.

What's more, there's no script here. A list of possible victims probably would have been a legal and political minefield, so that wasn't going to happen. Still, a paragraph about the episode and a closing "Never Again" would have been nice.

Here's a quick video on what happened:
