Barcelona, Spain: Casa Milà

One thing about architect Antoni Gaudi - his work was unique.

Take Casa Milà, a building in Barcelona. This was built from 1906 to 1912, and quickly became a subject of controversy. Indeed, it picked up the nickname of La Predrera, which translates to "the stone quarry" because of the wavy lines of the outside stone walls. You can get an idea of the outside by looking at the photograph shown here.

The building went through a variety of uses over the years, and wasn't in great shape as late as the early 1980s. That's when the city seemed to realize exactly what it had. A clean-up job was ordered, and it received recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Now, of course, the place is mobbed with tourists. It's at the point where it is difficult to walk around one of the apartments because it is so crowded. Don't stop and gawk; just keep walking. But how often do you see a funhouse turned into an apartment.
