Barcelona, Spain: Torre Glories

In a city that has a great deal of charming old architecture, this particular building stands out. 

It's the Torre Glories, a 38-story building that jumps out of the skyline of Barcelona. The structure serves as something of an introduction to the technology center of the city.

Construction started in 1999. This opened for business in 2005, with King Juan Carlos I doing the honors. The price tag was a reported 130 million Euros. The building was designed by Jean Nouvel, who thought it should represent a geyser. It was owned by the Agbar Group, a holding company, at the time of its opening. It had invested in a Barcelona water company, so you can see the connection. Personally, it looks like a rocket to me. 

Since then ownership has passed on to Merlin Properties, and received a new name to salute the square that it borders. One report said it soon will be turned into a luxury hotel. No matter what its purpose, it has become a landmark for the city. It can be seen almost anywhere (the photo was taken on a hill in a park that overlooks the city), and draws in some tourists for a close-up look.
