Bilbao, Spain: Shelter 1936 Monument

Here's another example of some public art that tourists might miss without some exploration. You might have figured out that it's a fingerprint of some kind. But what's up with that?

This is called "Shelter 1936," so we're making progress. Many Europeans associated 1936 with the Spanish Civil War. It's a tribute to those who defended Bilbao from the Franco forces during that conflict, as well as those who fought Franco's rule over the course of his 40-year reign. It checks in at around 19 feet.

It is located on Mount Artxanda, which overlooks the city. Very nice.
