Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland: John Cabot Statue

Once Columbus came back from his voyage across the Atlantic to the New World, other European leaders quickly became interested in the subject. King Henry VII of Britain was one of them, and he dispatched John Cabot and a crew to sail for territories unknown.

On June 24, Cabot and Company found land. Admittedly, we're not sure which land he found. But it was somewhere in this part of the world, and the legend points to Cape Bonavista as the likely spot for a landing. When it was time to honor him centuries later, it was decided to put up a statue on a hill overlooking the water.

From Cabot's first steps, England eventually started claiming land all over the New World, which essentially started what we would call American history. So the monument is worth noting. There's a nice view too.
