Alice Springs, Australia: Desert Park

People who come to the center of Australia for the first time need some lessons on what the area is like on the scientific side. This is the logical stop in Alice Springs.

Desert Park serves as both an educational area and a wildlife part. The Outback is one big desert, but that doesn't mean there aren't creatures around. The Park has several of them available for viewing. Kangaroos, dingos and emus hang out here, as do nocturnal critters who stay in a special building. There some reptiles there who live in this environment but who might be tough to find in the wild.

A highlight to any visit comes at the Nature Center. We happened to see a show involving native birds, and there were flying circles around the customers and then diving to the staff members. It's quite an impressive presentation. In this case, the handler is having a closer encounter with a wedge-tailed eagle, which is a mighty big bird. It is said to be Australia's largest bird of prey, and I believe it.

The public area is a very small percentage of the entire park. This promotional short video will give you a better idea of what's there:
