Cairns, Australia: Cairns Aquarium

It seems like a no-brainer. Take a good-sized city located on the ocean and place a world-famous, water-related attraction nearby. The next step is to celebrating all things aquatic by building an aquarium.

So it went for Cairns. The city's Aquarium is located only a couple of blocks from the oceanfront in its downtown area, a great way to attract people without using up any available land on the shore. It took until 2017 to make that idea a reality, but it's found a place as an attraction today.

As you'd expect, the Aquarium has a variety of creatures from the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rain forest, which are both UNESCO sites. There are 71 tanks in the facility in all. One has salt water and contains 1.8 millions of liquid. The big freshwater tank is a mere 400,000 liters.

There are 15,000 animals on display here. It even has a few that are either quite or relatively scarce in the area. For example, it has scalloped hammerhead sharks - which sounds like it could be on the dinner table. Instead, it is listed as part of America's Endangered Species Act. Estimates as the loss of these sharks runs as high as 95 percent in recent times.

This is not a particular huge building, so it isn't a huge investment of time to see it. But this is a nice addition to the area as a recreational and educational attraction.
