Still, it's one of the wonders of the Earth. If you want to take a look at it, Cairns is a great jumping-off point for visits. The city has used part of its oceanfront for a statue that pays tribute to the Reef.
Brian Robinson was called in for the job, and his work was unveiled in 2017. The title - Citizens Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef - doesn't roll of the tongue, but at least it describes the mission of the piece. The idea is that a stingray is leading a variety of marine creatures and birds, with the intent of making people think about the future of the famous landmark at sea.
This has become quite popular in Cairns, and is something of a meeting point for those headed to the shore.
