Mount Conner, Australia

After driving a long distance from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock in the Outback, it's easy to be anxious to see the famous mountain called Uluru in the region. When this mountain pops up in the distance, people become excited for their first glimpse as the famous formation.

The problem is that those people have been fooled. It's actually Mount Conner that pops up on the route. What do the good people of the region then call it? "Fool-uru." Very nicely done.

The area was named after M.L. Conner, a politician and businessman in the 19th century. The area is about 1,000 feet above ground level. The story gets a little worse once you reach it. Not only is the real thing almost two hours away, but drivers can't even take a break to see Mount Conner in person. It's on private property and can only be visited by a special tour. So the view from a lookout - which also serves as a good spot to view a dried-up lake - will have to do.
