Cairns, Australia: Koch Memorial

Three cheers for Dr. Edward Koch - no relation (I assume) to the former mayor of New York City. By all accounts, the Good Doctor did a lot for the citizens of Cairns while mixing skill and kindness to the formula, and is justly honored for his work with this monument.

Dr. Koch was born in Germany but landed in Cairns in 1879,. He eventually took charge of the main hospital in that city. One of his areas of expertise was in tropical diseases, such as malaria and typhoid. Dr. Koch was one of the first to realize the role played by mosquitos in the spread of malaria. He even visited workmen in swampy conditions and told them to roll down their sleeves late in the day to decrease the chances of bites.

Dr. Koch died in 1901, and an effort to salute him with some sort of monument quickly gained momentum. It was unveiled in 1903, and moved to a different part of downtown Cairns in the mid-1970s.
