The original courthouse was built on this space in 1884, but it didn't take long for the city to outgrow it. They tried again in 1890, and it was redone between the wars. Further expansions took place from there, and that worked until the 1990s. But it was time to start over when it came to a home for legal actions by then, and the building became a hotel briefly. The structure was turned into an art gallery in 2021, and became a home for art work and performance space.
The Cairns Art Gallery is right next door, and thus makes up a small complex dedicated to the arts. Check it out in the downtown area of Cairns.
