Sydney, Australia: Wendy's Secret Garden

It would be nice to tell you about the secret garden in Sydney, but we can't, It's a secret.

All right, we'll explain it. Wendy Whiteley was married to Brett Whiteley, and both were artists. After Brett died in 1992, Wendy became involved with fixing up some land. It was an odd piece of property in North Sydney. The shape didn't make sense and it was on a steep hill that led down to Lavender Bay, part of Sydney Harbour.

Wendy went to work and the land that once was owned by a railroad company became an urban oasis of sorts. But here's the catch: the entrances are on top of the hill and not easily seen from the street. Therefore, you really don't know anything's there from a distance. We went searching for it one night and couldn't find anything. A little help from a native is useful in finding it, as we discovered the secret the next day.

This is open all the time to the residents of Sydney, and there is no admission charge. The area is close to a couple of train stations as well as one end of the Harbour Bridge. Money has been placed in a trust to make sure that the garden lives on.
